All 14 ordered locomotives were delivered almost a year earlier than scheduled.

CZ Loko has completed the modernization of fourteen 742 series locomotives for České dráhy (ČD), delivering them almost a year ahead of schedule. The contract, worth almost 27.5 million EUR, initially projected the completion of the last vehicle in November 2024.

This accelerated modernization became essential to maintain the project's economy, especially after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, which disrupted supply chains and led to increased component costs. This prompt completion has enabled ČD to utilize the vehicles sooner than expected.

A significant challenge during the modernization was the unexpected discontinuation of the EBICAB system by Alstom, requiring a switch to the AURIGA system from Spanish manufacturer CAF. This change necessitated a complete overhaul of integration and testing processes for these locomotives, which are now fully equipped for commercial operation under the European Train Control System (ETCS) on the Czech railway network.

The comprehensive modernization of the 742 series into the EffiShunter 1000M, as part of ČD's Strategy 2030, aims to renew a significant portion of their vehicle fleet. Jiří Ješeta, a board member and deputy general director for passenger transport at ČD, highlighted CZ Loko's ability to fulfil this contract under challenging external conditions without altering the original price.

The upgraded locomotives will be used for independent traction services on corridors equipped with ETCS, with full operation under its supervision set to commence on selected railway networks from January 2025. The modernization into EffiShunters 1000M extends the lifespan of the locomotives, originally from ČKD dating between 1977 and 1988, significantly improving comfort, safety, maintenance simplicity, and reducing emissions. They are now equipped with online monitoring and diagnostics, along with a new generation of traction and auxiliary equipment. Only the undercarriage and main frame remain original, both undergoing major repairs and modifications. The locomotives have a 1000 kW combustion engine, allowing a maximum speed of 100 km/h.

CZ Loko has previously undertaken a similar modernization project for ČD Cargo, upgrading 50 locomotives of the same series between 2018 and 2022, with an additional 25 scheduled for delivery by the end of 2024. Modernization of 20 locomotives for Slovakian ZSSK CARGO is also underway (with 10 locomotives already produced). The same type of locomotive is also used by CER Cargo, Rail Cargo Carrier, or ODOS.
