Around 70 km north of Dresden, a new freight wagon maintenance workshop is under construction, with a scheduled opening in 2024. Its uniqueness is the CO2 neutrality of its operation.

Freight wagon leasing company VTG is building a new central location to maintain and repair its fleet. From early 2024, the company hopes to be less dependent on external repair shops and capable of maintaining around 2,000 freight cars per year in a new workshop in Großräschen, employing 40 people.

The workshop will focus on major revisions and repairs of intermodal wagons and tank cars. Mobile maintenance will also be managed from here. When finished, the workshop will span 65,000 m2 and rail tracks on site will span ten kilometres.

VTG committed to becoming a CO2-neutral company by 2040, and the new workshop aligns with this vision. Most of its electricity will be produced on-site by solar panels, and the workshop will run purely on green energy. A heat pump heating system will be used, as well as an electric shunting device for the needs of the workshop.
