New intermodal connections in Europe at the beginning of February 2024

During January and early February, several operators announced a higher frequency of existing routes and the start of new intermodal lines.


Roland Spedition: more departures between Wilhelmshaven (DE) and Austria

Roland Spedition has extended departure days for the connection on the North Sea with the Alps. In the new schedule, there are new direct connections from the Austrian terminals in Vienna, Graz and Enns to the port of Wilhelmshaven.

In January 2024, FRACHTbahn has not only announced the lease of EuroDual locomotives from ELP. The company also introduced a new intermodal service between Ludwigshafen(Rhine) and Vienna and Vienna.

Kombiverkehr: Increased capacity from Germany to Italy

From 7 February 2024, Kombiverkehr will increase its Duisburg (DE) – Mortara (IT) intermodal shuttles to five departures in both directions every week, tractioned by SBB Cargo International. On the German side, the company offers subsequent routes to Leipzig, Lübeck, Hamburg and Hanover in Germany and terminals in the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Sweden and Norway. In Italy, intermodal units can be transloaded for further journey south to Bari Giovinazzo.

In January 2024, Kombiverkehr also increased the frequency of its Munich – Trieste route from 3 to 5 round trips per week, using traction of DB Cargo, Lokomotion and Rail Traction Company.

Dania Connect: First train between Helsingborg (SE) and Jönköping (SE)

A new connection is offered by EIMSKIP and Dania Connect, offering one train a week between Helsingborg and Jönköping. To make the offering as green as possible, deliveries to recipients are made by trucks powered by HVO100.

Hupac: Improved timetable on Rotterdam (NL) – Warsaw (PL) route

From 5 February 2024, Hupac trains between Rotterdam CLdN and Warsaw / Hupac Brwinów terminal will run with an improved timetable, with 4 roundtrips per week. The connection offers consecutive connections from Rotterdam to the UK, Ireland and Portugal. All types of intermodal equipment can be transported - such as mega-trailers, containers and swap bodies.

Transped Europe: New intermodal route Verona (IT) – Wuppertal (DE)

From mid-January 2024, Transped Europe offers a new intermodal connection of Italy and Germany with 6 weekly roundtrips with a load capacity of 28 tonnes.   

GB Railfreight: New London (UK) to Doncaster (UK) service

A new intermodal service also started in the UK when on 29 January the first GB Railfreight train connected London Gateway to iPort (Doncaster). The service will be on offer 5 days a week.
