During November and early December 2023, several new transports and expansions of existing routes were announced. Here is the summary:


EUROPE

Swissterminal: More trains between Frenkendorf and Antwerp/Rotterdam

The known Schweizerzug, a connection of Switzerland with Belgian and Dutch ports, will extend its service from January 2024. Five round trips per week will be available between Frenkendorf and Antwerp, with an extended service to Rotterdam. Swissterminal also focuses on strengthening connectivity by servicing more terminals in Rotterdam. Together with its partner DP World, Swissterminal organises the transshipments to the terminals in Rotterdam and Antwerp, as well as the transportation from the first to the last mile in Switzerland, depending on the customer‘s requirements.

The first train for Boluda Maritime Terminal arrives at the Port of Santander

The Spanish Port of Santander witnessed its first container train from Madrid for the Boluda Maritime Terminal on 18.11.2023. The 426-metre train transported 29 40’ and 45’ containers. Through such initiatives, the port is increasing its rail intermodality rate, currently at 16%.

XPO: New intermodal route between Italy and Germany

XPO Logistics launched a new multimodal route between Domodossola terminal in Italy and Duisburg in Germany. The 900 km route is dedicated to P400 semitrailers.

Rapeseed oil in containers from Ukraine to Lithuanian port with LTG Cargo

LTG Cargo Ukraine organised the transportation of 44 tank containers loaded with rapeseed oil. It originated in Yagodin in Ukraine, and its final destination was the port of Klaipeda.

Fret SNCF's new contract

Based on a newly won contract, French Fret SNCF will transport over 2,000 wagons of steel products between German Saarbrücken and French Golbey and Conflandey.

HELROM: Increased frequency on the Vienna - Düsseldorf route

From February 2025, HELROM will start daily departures between the Austrian capital and the Rhine industrial area, resulting from a strong demand on the market. 12 Helrom trains per week will run on this lane. Thanks to HELROM's horizontal loading technology, all trailers (refrigerated, box, mega, standard) can travel, even those that cannot be craned.

UPS puts shipments on rails between Germany and Italy

In collaboration with CargoBeamer, UPS is joining the package delivery trend of shifting to rail. Swap bodies are now transloaded for the long journey between Germany and Italy, marking UPS’ first move towards integrating railways into its logistics system.

AMERICAS

CN: New intermodal service to Port of Gulport

Canadian National Railway Company (CN) announced signing a memorandum of understanding with the Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulfport and Ports America establishing a new intermodal service to the Port of Gulport. This new ocean port will help move goods between the Gulf Coast, US Midwest and Canada. 

BNSF: New intermodal service with three destinations in Mexico

BNSF, in partnership with J.B Hunt and Mexico's largest rail freight operator, GMXT, launched a new intermodal service to Mexico via Texas’ Eagle Pass gateway. It connects the U.S. market with three freight destinations in Mexico: Monterrey, Silao-Bajio and Pantaco-Mexico. This link shortens delivery time by one day and will be launched at the beginning of 2024.

ASIA

The first China – Laos – Thailand express freight train

In late November 2023, an intermodal train departed from Chengdu International Railway Port, transporting cargo for customers in Thailand. The service cuts delivery time between the two countries to five days.
