The new arrivals are part of the equipment being acquired for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Locomotives were designed and manufactured by Hyundai Rotem, with electric equipment supplied by Škoda Group. According to TRC's Acting Director, Machibya M. Shiwa, there are now four out of 17 ordered locomotives from Hyundai Rotem in Tanzania. The first locomotive was received earlier and has been undergoing thorough testing by now.
Alongside the locomotives, TRC also received 27 passenger coaches, designed by Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology (SSRST), also from South Korea. This batch includes 13 business class coaches and 14 economy class coaches. The total number of coaches received so far by TRC is 56, out of an order of 59 from SSRST.
The arrival of the first out of ten electric multiple units, which were also ordered, is expected in March, followed by further deliveries spread throughout the year, culminating in October. Each set of these trains will have a capacity to carry 640 passengers.
