South Korean Hyundai Rotem is progressing with assembling the first locomotives and electric multiple units for Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC). They will be used on the first launched section of the standard gauge railway (SGR) between Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Makutopora, stretching almost 550 km.
Hyundai Rotem has finalised the first 88 tonnes locomotive and will start its test at the end of 2023. The electric multiple units (EMUs) will consist of 8 cars, and the first of ten trainsets are also visible on the assembly lines in the South Korean Changwon facility of Hyundai Rotem.
A delegation of TRC came to the factory in July 2023 to see the rolling stock first-hand. TRC has also recently shipped second-hand refurbished older German double-deck coaches, and two second-hand (ex Class 1014) locomotives from Austria are also available as additional rolling stock for the route.
