Another contractual victory for the Finnish operator expanding abroad.

VR Sverige has been awarded the contract to operate the Öresundståg regional train services starting in December 2025. The agreement, which extends until 2030, includes both the operation and maintenance of the train fleet that connects southern Sweden with Denmark.

The decision was announced by Öresundståg AB, a company jointly owned by the regions of Blekinge, Halland, Kronoberg, Skåne, Kalmar, and Västra Götaland. The contract is valued at approximately SEK 6 billion (EUR 529 million) over the five-year period, engaging around 880 employees in the process.

This development marks VR Sverige's fourth major contract since VR Group acquired Arriva's Swedish operations in July 2022. It also signifies VR's initial venture into Danish territory through the cross-border Öresundståg services.

VR Group, owned by the Finnish state, has a longstanding history in rail transport for both passengers and freight. The company expanded into the Swedish market in 2022 and further grew by acquiring high-speed operator MTRX in May 2024. In 2023, VR Group reported a turnover of EUR 1.2 billion and employed approximately 9,100 people, focusing on sustainable rail and public transport solutions.

In Sweden, VR Sverige will also operate X-tåget, Norrtåg services, and former MTRX service in Sweden, which will be renamed to Grodan.
