The contract will run for 11 years, starting in June 2025.

VR Sverige has won a significant contract with X-trafik in Sweden, which will start operations in the Gävleborg region in June 2025. The 11-year contract, valued at approximately SEK 900 million, further consolidates VR's presence in Sweden following its strategic acquisition in summer 2022. The move is in line with VR's growth strategy and marks an active participation in regional public transport tenders. The contract is VR Sverige's second successful tender since the acquisition of VR, the first being for train services in the Bergslagen region (Tåg i Bergslagen).

The X-trafik trains, which cover the central Swedish region from Gävle to Ljusdal and Sundsvall, will see VR take over the services currently operated by Vy Tåg AB. These services mainly use nine two- and three-car Regina trains.

VR's expansion in Sweden began after the acquisition of Arriva Sverige AB in July 2022, which now operates under the name VR Sverige AB. The Group has actively participated in regional public transport tenders in both Finland and Sweden. This strategic move has positioned VR Group as a significant player in the Nordic public transport landscape, currently ranking as the third-largest train operator and fourth-largest bus operator in Sweden.
