VR Sverige has been announced as the new operator for Norrtåg services, starting from mid-December 2025. The contract, previously held by Vy Tåg AB, spans ten years and is valued at approximately EUR 280 million, involving around 200 employees.
Initially, the service will utilize the existing trains provided by the client. Over the contract period, significant developments are expected, including the opening of the Norrbotniabanan railway and the introduction of new rolling stock. Additionally, a new depot will be constructed in Umeå.
This contract places VR Sverige in regions anticipated to experience substantial growth in the coming decades. The company's role will be crucial in promoting environmentally friendly travel options for both work and leisure.
Norrtåg AB is owned by the regional public transport authorities of Norrbotten, Västernorrland, Västerbotten, and Jämtland Härjedalen. The operation is funded by these northern regions, alongside state contributions and ticket revenues. Norrtåg AB is responsible for procuring and managing the rail services.
VR has over a hundred years of experience in operating public transport on the Finnish market. In 2022, VR Group acquired Arriva Sweden, which has been on the Swedish market since 1999. VR Sweden is now part of VR Group's passenger division.
