The depot overhaul enables servicing for 94 trains, with specific modifications to support WMR’s Class 196 fleet and improve efficiency for Class 172 and CrossCountry’s Class 170 fleets. Tyseley’s main shed was extended to accommodate the 96-metre-long Class 196 units, increasing covered capacity from 29 to 38 vehicles. The facility also features new train lifting systems and upgraded inspection zones.
A 302-panel solar installation has been added to the shed roof, expected to generate 124,000 kWh annually and reduce carbon emissions by 58 tonnes per year.
Tyseley Depot currently employs over 200 people, including 130 technicians and 16 apprentices. The site plays a central role in WMR’s engineering training initiatives.
The upgrade was jointly funded by Angel Trains and the UK Department for Transport, with works delivered by Spencer Rail Engineering. The Class 196 fleet entered passenger service in 2022, operating regional routes including Birmingham to Hereford and Shrewsbury, as well as the Nuneaton–Coventry–Leamington corridor.
