SBB Cargo is preparing for times when only battery and electric locomotives will be deployed in Switzerland. Until then, it has solved the issue with its only relevant diesel locomotives fleet with their sale & leaseback.

There are 44 diesel Am843 SBB Cargo locomotives in operation across Switzerland. With the plan to renew its fleet in the next ten years, the company, recently fully taken over by SBB, decided to sell them and lease them back for a period of at least five years.

In the daily operations, nothing will change. These locomotives will keep on serving the same duties as now across Switzerland. Over time, they will be replaced by their battery and electric counterparts. When that happens, their new owner, Nordic Re-Finance, has a plan to use them abroad. Most probably, we will see them deployed across Scandinavia, a European market hungry for more modern shunting locomotives.
