Beacon Rail supplies Class 18 locomotive to Freightliner

Beacon Rail has supplied a Class 18 locomotive to Freightliner Group Ltd for operation at Basford Hall, Crewe.


The Class 18 locomotive, manufactured by Clayton Equipment, is part of an initiative aimed at reducing emissions in line with Freightliner's decarbonisation goals. The locomotive will be used in shunting operations at Basford Hall, Crewe, showcasing an interest in adopting alternative traction options to support environmental objectives.

The Class 18 locomotive is a hybrid shunter, equipped with four 104 kW motors, each producing a peak torque of 2800 Nm. It features a 524kWh battery, which can be charged from external power sources or by its onboard JCB EU stage V 55kW diesel engine. This design allows for a flexible approach to operation, balancing the use of battery power with the diesel engine to optimize efficiency and minimize emissions.

Freightliner has welcomed the arrival of the Class 18 locomotive as an important component of its commitment to achieving lower emissions in its logistics operations. Through initiatives like this, the company aims to contribute to a more sustainable future in the transportation sector.

Beacon Rail has 15 of Class 18 locomotives on order, and has delivered this locomotive type to GB Railfreight (GBRf) in 2022 already.
