By using this technology, a single train can transport up to a quarter more of wood.

Since October 2023, Innofreight has been involved in a timber transportation solution, where the Smart GigaWood Round & Sawn are in use, tailored specifically for Schwaiger Holzindustrie in Germany. These wagons have been utilized to optimize the movement of timber products across the country.

The Smart GigaWood Round & Sawn is a modular system designed to carry different types of timber goods. It serves dual purposes by transporting round wood and sawn timber efficiently. The wagons are equipped with stanchions that are 2.5 meters long, allowing for the transportation of up to 120 solid cubic meters of logs on every 2x45 ft wagon, which is 25 percent more than traditional wagons can hold. It also allows loading wood over the close coupling. For sawn timber, the wagons can accommodate up to 191 cubic meters on a double wagon setup.

At Schwaiger Holzindustrie, 85 trucks with round wood arrive every week, thus the environmental savings are big. Annually, this sawmill with over a century on the market, processes over 1 million cubic meters of round wood.

The Innofreight solution involves the arrival of trainset loaded with round wood on Sunday to Hengersberg plant in Bavaria, southern Germany. By Monday, the same trainset is loaded with sawn timber. It arrives in one of the North Sea ports for export by Wednesday, repositioning wagons for another round wood load by Friday. On Sunday, new dose of round wood arrives in Bavaria and the cycle repeats. Schwaiger Holzindustrie uses the EVB EuroDual locomotives leased from European Loc Pool for this service, enabling operation under catenary, in diesel mode as well as for shunting.

Additionally, these wagons have a maximum payload capacity of 144 tons, consistent with other systems such as the Smart GigaWood 5×5. Innofreight is also testing the possibility of adapting these wagons to transport standard ISO containers instead of timber, aiming to increase the versatility of their rail equipment.
