Adif has announced a new investment of €75.3 million for the construction of section II of the new southern railway access to the Port of Castellón. The project is part of a broader agreement between Adif, Puertos del Estado, and the Port Authority of Castellón, with a total investment of €159.7 million. The new rail link will be a single electrified, mixed-gauge track dedicated to freight trains and will connect the port facilities to the Mediterranean Corridor. This connection is expected to boost intermodal freight transport, making mobility more efficient, competitive, and sustainable.

The southern railway access will be 8.3 km in total, with 4.7 km for Section I and 3.6 km for Section II. Adif has already started construction on Section I, while Section II, which has now been tendered, includes the construction of two viaducts, two underpasses, and two overpasses with a roundabout. The project also includes the construction of the intermodal station, which will be located on the new southern railway access, although its investment is not included in the agreement. The Port Authority of Castellón is responsible for the design of the station, which will be integrated into the General Interest Railway Network (RFIG).

The new railway access aims to reinforce rail-port connectivity and strengthen Spanish ports as logistics platforms of reference in southern Europe. It will also contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), especially its targets of developing reliable infrastructures and modernizing infrastructure. The total investment in all the actions to make the southern rail access to the Port of Castellón a reality amounts to €335.5 million.
