Finnish rail freight operator, VR Transpoint, launched the first train of raw wood from Rovaniemi to Kemi, where Metsä Group is building its new bioproduct factory. With the investment o 2.02 billion EUR, this mill will process 7.6 million tonnes of wood annually. When the factory is fully operational in the third quarter of 2023, the aim is to maximise rail transport and to reach 8-10 trains per week. Each train will pull a load of around 2,500 tonnes, and the first train departed from Rovaniemi on 21 April 2023. VR Transpoint uses Siemens Mobility's Vectron locomotives (Class Sr3) for these trips, equipped with a diesel power module for shunting. For additional needs, newly-delivered Dr19 diesel high-cab locomotives made by Stadler in Valencia will be used. At the same time, the new factory in Kemi will require to dedicate 400 wagons for shipments to this new mill.
