Renfe Mercancías, the freight division of the Spanish national railway company Renfe, has awarded Slovak Tatravagónka with a contract for the supply of 149 rail wagons, worth over 39 million euros. Tatravagónka has a 22-month period to deliver the two batches of wagons.
This decision was approved by Renfe Mercancías' Board of Directors and follows a negotiated tender process that was part of the European Union's Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan – NextGenerationEU. The EU plan will partially fund the acquisition with 14.5 million euros. Already last year, Renfe Mercancías announced the intention to invest in new rolling stock.
The procurement consists of two lots: one comprising 74 60-foot container wagons (Type Sgnss) and the other consisting of 75 semi-trailer wagons (Type Sdggmrss) intended for use on rail motorways (autopistas ferroviarias). Renfe Mercancías aims to expand, modernize, and diversify its rolling stock with this acquisition, enhancing the efficiency, speed, and safety of its freight transport services.
In September 2023, Renfe Mercancías selected its preferred strategic partner to become a comprehensive logistics operator. It will be Medlog, belonging to the shipping giant, MSC.
