In a decisive step towards a more sustainable logistics industry, Girteka, in partnership with Samskip, has announced a significant expansion of its intermodal transport services. The initiative, which connects Nassjo/Katrineholm in Sweden to Duisburg in Germany, is a key step in addressing the urgent need to decarbonize logistics.
The expanded service, which started in December 2023, operates seven days a week, offering unparalleled flexibility and increased capacity for freight transport. More than just a logistical enhancement, the route expansion is a strategic response to the growing demand for sustainable supply chain solutions.
“Our joined commitments will by default lead to an exciting journey whilst optimizing the opportunities that our both companies encounter. With today’s suffering European economies we will deploy the assets when and where we see sustainable demand,” said Gert Jan Meijer from Samskip.
Central to this development is a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Although the exact figures will vary, the initiative will dramatically reduce emissions per tonne-mile, in line with the European Union's Greener Freight Package. This approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also responds to consumer and government demands for greener practices.
The new intermodal services promise operational efficiency and reliability, as rail connections eliminate the frequent stops and delays common to road transport. This results in predictable and timely deliveries, a critical factor in logistics. In addition, using rail means shorter journeys for truck drivers, improving fuel efficiency and working conditions, reflecting Girteka's commitment to responsible logistics.
