Alstom has partnered with robotics innovator FLOX Robotics to address a critical issue in the railway sector: wildlife collisions. The railway industry often faces unavoidable collisions with animals due to train speeds and braking distances, resulting in material damage, emotional trauma for train drivers, and animal deaths. In response to these challenges, Alstom and FLOX Robotics are introducing a solution to repel animals and reduce the likelihood of collisions.

The solution introduced through this collaboration uses advanced image analysis and AI algorithms to identify animals in the vicinity and emit a tailor-made repellent sound to deter them. Developed in partnership with the Swedish Agriculture University (SLU), the technology adapts over time to ensure continued effectiveness. Tests in Sweden with Trafikverket, the Swedish National Road Administration, have confirmed its effectiveness in 88% of cases.

Unlike traditional systems, which lose effectiveness over time as animals become accustomed to the deterrent noise, the Alstom-FLOX Robotics system offers sustained effectiveness, making it a promising solution for reducing wildlife collisions while minimizing disturbance to local communities and non-target wildlife.

“We combine state-of-the-art wildlife expertise with artificial intelligence to make sure the solution is multi-species, autonomous and works with high efficiency over long periods of time - to prevent wild animals from becoming accustomed to it, which has proven to be an issue with existing solutions,” said Sara Nozkova, CEO at FLOX Robotics.

Pilot projects will be rolled out in selected regions later this year, reflecting a commitment to environmental protection and railway safety. This collaborative effort demonstrates how technology and determination can create solutions that benefit both people and nature.
