NEXRAIL orders up to 200 Stadler EURO9000 hybrid (electric + battery) locomotives

The newly configured EURO9000 integrates overhead and battery power sources, built on the existing Co’Co’ platform.

Luxembourg-based leasing company NEXRAIL has ordered up to 200 EURO9000 hybrid locomotives from Stadler. The locomotives will be manufactured at Stadler’s Valencia site, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2029. Hamburger Rail Service (HRS) is the launch customer.

The units are intended for cross-border freight operations across six European countries: Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy.

According to Stadler, the battery module is designed not only for last-mile operation but also for additional functionalities such as energy recuperation during braking and load balancing.

  • 1.5 kV DC
  • Battery: 636 kWh LTO

Power output at wheel rim:

  • Electric (via pantograph): up to 9,000 kW
  • Battery: up to 1,200 kW

Starting tractive effort: 500 kN

Continuous tractive effort: 430 kN

Maximum speed: 120 km/h
