The 15 locomotives are designated for deployment in Germany and Austria, joining Alpha Trains’ existing roster of Vectron AC, MS, and Dual Mode units.

Alpha Trains has placed an order for 15 additional Vectron Dual Mode (VDM) locomotives from Siemens Mobility. The move follows a framework agreement signed in July 2024 and builds on the existing maintenance contract between the two companies from 2023 for Siemens to service Alpha Trains’ Vectron fleet.

Each Vectron Dual Mode unit is capable of operating under electric traction on electrified lines (output up to 2.4 MW at the wheels) and switching to onboard diesel power (up to 2.0 MW) on non‑electrified sections. In both modes, the locomotives are rated for freight speeds up to 160 km/h. The dual‑mode capability reduces the need for locomotive changes on mixed lines and allows greater route flexibility.

Manufacture is scheduled at Siemens’ Munich‑Allach plant. The maintenance contract covers upkeep of these new units under the same framework established in 2023.
