The Railway Reform Authority (ARF) of Romania has signed a contract with the Alstom consortium for the acquisition of 16 new electric locomotives. The agreement, finalized at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure in Bucharest on January 29, 2024, is part of a broader initiative to enhance Romania's passenger rail transport.
Alstom Traxx locomotives are capable of reaching speeds between 160 and 200 km/h and can tow up to 16 passenger wagons. The contract, valued at 154.2 million euros also includes a 20-year maintenance, with 20 more in option.
Funding for this procurement comes from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan under its Sustainable Transport component and the Romanian state budget.
Delivery of the first locomotive is expected at the beginning of 2026. Autoritatea pentru Reformă Feroviară (ARF) belongs to the Romania Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and it will lease the locomotives to the national passenger rail operator, CFR Călători.
