Manufacturing record: UZ made the most wagons in its history in 2023

In 2023, Ukrzaliznytsia, the state-owned railway company in Ukraine, significantly increased its production capabilities at its own facilities.


Ukrzaliznytsia (UZ) successfully built 528 freight cars, marking a five-year record in its manufacturing history. Among these, 427 were fitting platforms.

During the same year, Ukrzaliznytsia commenced the production of a prototype grain truck, along with the serial production of 50 dump trucks and 50 hopper dispensers. Additionally, the company developed a grain truck specifically optimized for transportation on both 1520 and 1435 track gauges. This grain truck, predominantly made from domestic components and materials, reflects the company's commitment to utilizing local resources.

Regarding raw materials production, 2023 was a notable year for Ukrzaliznytsia. The company achieved a 33% increase in crushed stone production, reaching 2.7 million tons. Similarly, the production of sleepers rose by 6%, totalling 867,000 units. Another significant achievement was the record production of reinforced concrete structures, which grew by 10.5% compared to 2022, amounting to 6,937 thousand cubic meters.

Moreover, Ukrzaliznytsia expanded its product range by mastering the production of 47 new items. This expansion included manufacturing 37,000 units of various products such as backbone beams, side beams, container stops, brake shoes, shock absorbers for absorption apparatus, aluminium door frames, compressors, and generators for passenger cars. These efforts resulted in substantial savings of around 120 million hryvnias.

Looking ahead to 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia has set ambitious plans to further enhance its operational capabilities. Using its plant capacities, the company aims to increase the volume of major repairs on locomotives and electric trains by 15% and 8%, respectively. There is also a focus on boosting crushed stone production, driven by orders from third-party customers. Additionally, Ukrzaliznytsia is committed to developing new products and technologies, continuing its trajectory of growth and innovation in the railway sector.
