PKP Intercity has finalised a contract with Newag SA to acquire 46 new electric locomotives.

The deal, valued at over EUR 230 million, is a step in PKP Intercity's strategy to renew its fleet by 2030 with new or modernised vehicles.

The new single-system Griffin electric locomotives, expected to be operational by 2024, are designed for speeds up to 160 km/h and will be equipped with modern safety and diagnostic features, including the ETCS level two (L2) system, fire protection, monitoring, and communication technologies. This acquisition will bring the total number of modern locomotives supplied by Newag to PKP Intercity to 96.

As part of the agreement, Newag will also provide maintenance for the locomotives up to their first major repair, with PKP Intercity's personnel involved in the process. The project's total budget is over EUR 270 million gross.

Additionally, PKP Intercity recently acquired 30 EU160 Griffin series locomotives, with a total contract value of PLN 551.4 million gross. Following this, an agreement for another 20 Griffin electric locomotives, valued at over PLN 500 million gross, was signed in March, with the first vehicle delivered in December.

PKP Intercity, Poland's largest railway operator, aims to enhance transport accessibility across major cities, tourist centres, and smaller communities. By 2030, the entire fleet will be upgraded, aligning with the European Green Deal's objectives and PKP Intercity's goal of climate-neutral operations.
