The construction phase for a new curved track at the Kühnsdorf freight terminal in southern Carinthia has started following a groundbreaking ceremony held this week.

The project, valued at EUR 2.9 million, is financed by the State of Carinthia along with the municipalities of Völkermarkt, Eberndorf, and St. Kanzian. It aims to provide a direct rail link between the planned freight terminal and the Koralm Railway corridor.

The development is situated on a 10-hectare site purchased in 2022 for EUR 1.85 million by the State’s Department 9 for Roads and Bridges. IGP Jauntal, a joint venture of the involved municipalities, is overseeing construction. Completion of the entire facility is planned for the end of 2026.

The project consists of two phases. The first phase, scheduled to finish by May 2026, includes earthworks, construction site preparation, and the installation of a 500-meter-long, six-meter-high noise barrier. Approximately 30,000 cubic metres of earth will be moved. The second phase will focus on track construction and signalling systems. Around 40 tonnes of steel and 2,000 tonnes of track ballast will be used. The new track curve will extend 700 metres, while the freight terminal will feature 364 metres of loading tracks.

Alongside the track connection, existing buildings at the Kühnsdorf site will be renovated to support freight operations. In addition, roughly 20 hectares of adjacent land has been secured for the development of logistics and railway-related industrial activities.

Operating costs for the freight terminal will be shared between the municipalities and private sector partners, including Kruschitz Immobilien and Strabag subsidiary Mineral Abbau GmbH.

This infrastructure development is positioned along the Koralm Railway, which is currently under construction and intended to serve both freight and passenger traffic in southern Austria. The Kühnsdorf freight yard is intended to complement the region’s logistics infrastructure, alongside the existing Fürnitz terminal.
