The Slovenian Government has amended the national site plan for the second track of the Divača–Koper railway line, aiming to double-track this crucial route by adding a left track.

The updated plan focuses on improving connectivity between local centers and supporting economic development through job maintenance, regional and international cooperation, increased accessibility, and stronger economic ties beyond existing pan-European transport corridors.

Construction of the right track is already underway under the current construction permit. The amendment provides the necessary arrangements to build a new double track, including adding a parallel left track in sections where it was not previously planned. New access roads required for the construction and operation of the left track are also included.

The existing track between the Prešnica bifurcation and Koper is set to be abandoned. Upgrades are planned for the existing Divača–Koper track in the section between Divača and the Prešnica bifurcation, where the Pula railway line begins. These works are considered maintenance within the public railway infrastructure and will remain within the area of the existing track.

The project company 2TDK, which oversees the current construction, will also invest in the parallel left track. With the longest tunnels on the route being double-tube, 61 percent of the route for the parallel left track is already constructed. The amendment has also been approved at the latest National Assembly of Slovenia.

Recent developments

In related developments, the first 400 meters of track on the Koper side have been laid. From the turnout track to the Škofije Tunnel (T8), tracks have been installed on concrete sleepers, along with the erection of catenary masts.

Workers used wagons to distribute ballast, which was then spread over the newly laid tracks using a plow. A tamping machine carried out the initial vertical and horizontal alignment of the track. The laying of the track paused before the Škofije Tunnel, as the track will continue on a rigid base from that point onward.
