Katowice Airport is set to undergo significant infrastructure development with the construction of a multimodal cargo and fuel transshipment hub.

The project, managed by the Upper Silesian Aviation Group (GTL SA), will be executed by a consortium comprising Budimex and Mostostal Kraków. The contract, valued at EUR 33.6 million gross, was finalized on July 24, as Railmarket’s partner media, Sektor Kolejowy, reports.

The new hub will feature a railway siding connecting the Katowice airport to the Central Railway Main Line via railway line no. 182 (Tarnowskie Góry - Zawiercie). This infrastructure will include a three-track front for the transshipment of fuels and goods, three 1000 m³ storage tanks, and stations for unloading tank trucks. Additionally, in the airport's restricted zone, there will be stations for filling tank trucks.

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2026, the project aims to streamline cargo handling and aircraft fueling processes at the airport. By shifting a substantial portion of cargo transport from road to rail, the hub supports a sustainable transport system. The facility will also be equipped to handle alternative fuels, aligning with efforts to reduce climate emissions.

The hub will serve both civilian and military functions, ensuring supply continuity for ongoing operations. Its interoperable nature will benefit nearby companies, offering a versatile solution for various logistical needs.

Financial support for the project comes from the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2021-2027 Military Mobility program, covering up to 50% of eligible costs.
