Network Rail begins restoration of world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Work has already started on a £3.4 million project to repair the 123-year-old viaduct.
At 1,000ft, it's the longest viaduct in Scotland and is known for having featured in the Harry Potter films. Network Rail and main contractor AmcoGiffen have set up a site at the foot of the landmark, which sits 100ft above the River Finnan on the West Highland Line, 17 miles from Fort William.
The work will form part of Network Rail's ongoing maintenance programme and will help to future-proof the viaduct. Scheduled to take just under 12 months to complete, engineers will assess the condition and strength of the viaduct and make improvements underneath the track to keep the stone ballast in place.
"The main work on the viaduct will be concrete repairs. We'll also be carrying out some repairs to the pier which sits in the River Finnan," said Laura Craig, Project Manager for the scheme at Network Rail.
