Alstom has broken ground on a new manufacturing site in Matosinhos that will support its contract to supply 153 commuter and regional trains to CP.

A total of 81 trains will be manufactured at the new facility in the Porto region, forming the local production element of Alstom’s contract with Comboios de Portugal (CP), Portugal’s national passenger operator.

The site will cover more than 20,000 square metres and is expected to create around 300 direct jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs. Construction will be carried out with Portuguese civil engineering company DST.

Alstom said locating part of the production in Portugal would reduce logistical complexity and support delivery of the CP order. The Matosinhos facility will also become part of the manufacturer’s wider European production network.

The order covers 153 three-car commuter and regional trains designed for the Portuguese market. Each unit will have capacity for up to 450 passengers.

Passenger equipment will include step-free access, level floors, Wi-Fi and dedicated areas for wheelchairs and bicycles. Alstom says more than 95% of the trains’ materials will be recyclable.

“This project plays a key role in delivering the CP contract under optimal conditions, while supporting the development of local capabilities,” said Andrew DeLeone, President of Alstom Europe.

Alstom has operated in Portugal for more than 30 years and also supplies signalling technology used across more than 1,500 kilometres of the country’s rail network.
