The Port Authority of Castellón has announced the completion of its storage and classification station situated at the south dock.

This development will facilitate the dispatch and reception of goods within the Port of Castellón, linking directly with its railway entrances, the intermodal station, and eventually the Mediterranean corridor. The construction contract, valued at €5.6 million, was awarded to Red Ferroviaria Dársena Sur UTE.

Featuring two mixed gauge tracks, the new classification station can accommodate trains up to 400 meters in length. This infrastructure is strategic for increasing exports of both bulk and general merchandise, in addition to facilitating the import of more goods.

The establishment of this internal classification station is part of PortCastelló's broader goal to improve its hinterland connections and support dry ports such as those in Aragon, which previously routed their goods through other ports due to the absence of direct rail links to Castellón.

This initiative complements the ongoing efforts to connect the Port of Castellón with the Mediterranean corridor, aiming to increase rail freight traffic and offer a more efficient, competitive, and sustainable transport option.

Plans are also underway for the construction of an external intermodal station, expected to start in the upcoming months and conclude by 2026, aligning with European directives. This facility will accommodate trains up to 750 meters long on its eight mixed gauge tracks.

Technical Details of the Internal Railway Network:

  • The railway platform supports both Iberian and international gauge specifications.
  • It consists of two parallel tracks, measuring 621 and 560 meters in length, respectively, with two switch points at both ends of the track pool.
  • Adjacent to the railway platform is a designated area for container storage, measuring 475 meters in length and 26 meters in width. This space includes areas for the operation of reachstacker cranes, transfer roads, and access to the platform, resulting in a concrete paved area of approximately 16,650 square meters.
