Under the contract, Hitachi Rail will be responsible for the design and installation of ERTMS digital signalling technology on trains in Sweden and Norway.

Tågåkeriet I Bergslagen AB (Tågab) has signed a contract with Hitachi Rail to install ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) signaling technology for the modernization of Tågab's Scandinavian fleet. This upgrade will improve operational efficiency, interoperability, and the availability of the vehicles, reducing potential traffic disruptions.

Hitachi Rail will design, build, install, test, certify and commission the onboard signaling system based on ERTMS technology and STM-ATC2 – a system that allows the trains to operate on conventional lines.

Eric Morand - in charge of the Nordics region for Hitachi Rail said: "We are excited to be working to digitise and harmonise key services between Norway and Sweden and to use our innovative signaling solutions to create a more reliable and efficient service for passengers. I am honored and grateful to Tågab for their trust in Hitachi Rail as a key partner to innovate and support the development of smart and sustainable rail mobility for the benefit of societies across Scandinavia.”

ERTMS is the most advanced technology for digitally controlling a train’s operations and is designed to harmonize different train control systems.

With the installation of the interoperable systems, the Tågab trains will be able to operate seamlessly on mixed traffic lines across Scandinavia, from Sweden to Norway. This new technology will also enable the automatic deployment of train safety functions, such as braking if a threat is detected. This ability to detect and manage faults will mean that the service can increase its reliability. Similarly, by controlling the speed, acceleration, and braking, the system is expected to reduce energy footprint and increase resource efficiency.

“We are proud and grateful that a world-leading company, Hitachi Rail, will help a small regional railway undertaking in Sweden, Tågab, to take this step to the future! Now we hope to be able to contribute to the introduction of ERTMS on a wider scale in Scandinavia together with Hitachi Rail,” Lars Yngström – CEO of Tågab said.

Hitachi Rail is a global industry leader in digital signaling and is the first provider to introduce ERTMS technology in Europe – in the UK, Italy, Spain, and France – and the highly competitive markets of China and India. Tеgеkeriet I Bergslagen AB (Tеgab) is one of the first independent train operators in Sweden after liberalization and now is the most complete railway company in Sweden with freight and passenger services, workshops, and local infrastructure.
