The deployment is Intramotev’s first regulated use case and its first international deployment.

Intramotev has signed a commercial agreement with Austria’s ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) to operate its TugVolt autonomous railcars in Austria.

Under the agreement, ÖBB Rail Cargo Group will operate TugVolt railcars as part of the SARI initiative, which focuses on integrating highly automated freight wagons into existing rail networks for first- and last-mile operations. The initiative is financially supported by Austria’s Rail4Climate programme and backed by the R4C consortium.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group runs more than 1,000 freight trains per day across 18 countries and transports 78.7 billion net tonnes annually. The operator intends to test TugVolt technology within its network under Austrian regulatory conditions.

Intramotev, headquartered in St. Louis, develops independently driven freight wagons designed for autonomous operation. The agreement with ÖBB Rail Cargo Group follows deployments in the United States, including operations launched with Watco in Illinois in February and an agreement with R.J. Corman covering the 113-mile Memphis Line in Kentucky.
