Following the approval for operations in Austria, the first customer starts using these dual modes in real operations. With the authorisation in place, the locomotives can be deployed across the Austrian network and on routes into Germany without technical restrictions related to train control systems.
The Siemens Mobility Vectron Dual Mode is designed for operation under overhead line equipment as well as on non-electrified sections using an onboard diesel power module. This allows continuous operation on routes that include non-electrified sidings or terminals, avoiding locomotive changes on last-mile sections.
Stern & Hafferl Verkehr said the locomotives will be used primarily in freight operations requiring access to customers without electrified connections, particularly on cross-border services between Austria and Germany.
In total, six locomotives have already been made for the operator, with two more on order. The freight division of the carrier serves Upper Austrian local railway lines transporting cement and limestone, agriculture products and aggregates, serving as a last-mile regional operator for Rail Cargo Austria.
