Leonhard Weiss has ordered a Euro9000 dual-mode locomotive from European Loc Pool (ELP) to support its rail construction activities.
The Euro9000 will be used on both electrified and non-electrified routes, allowing Leonhard Weiss to operate continuous transport runs without changing locomotives. The dual-mode design replaces earlier hybrid traction used by the company and allows access to routes that were previously not feasible with its own equipment.
Technically, the locomotive provides up to 9 MW of electric power, a diesel module for operation away from overhead lines, a 20-tonne axle load and tractive effort of up to 500 kN. These parameters are intended for heavy construction traffic, including ballast and material trains. Steep gradients, such as the Geislinger Steige, can be operated without the use of a pusher locomotive.
The locomotive is scheduled to enter service in January 2026. Leonhard Weiss selected ELP after comparing several offers. In addition to the locomotive’s performance characteristics, the Full-Service Leasing model and existing cooperation with ELP and Stadler were factors in the decision. Maintenance and servicing will be covered externally, as the company does not maintain large in-house workshop capacities.
