Rock Rail has ordered 35 Siemens Mireo units for the Elektronetz Nord-Magdeburg network, supporting Deutsche Bahn’s fleet renewal in Saxony-Anhalt.

Rock Rail, together with Infracapital and MEAG, has confirmed a major investment in 35 Siemens Mireo EMUs for operation on Germany’s Elektronetz Nord-Magdeburg (ENORM) network. The fleet will be leased to Deutsche Bahn, serving the Magdeburg and Halle region from the early 2030s.

The order includes 16 three-car and 19 four-car Mireo units — Siemens’ established commuter platform, already in use across multiple European networks. The ENORM contract builds on Rock Rail’s previous investments in German rolling stock, including the S-Bahn Mitteldeutschland fleets and the Mittelthüringer Akku-Netz battery trains.

Focus on accessibility and operational flexibility

The new fleet will provide step-free access, PRM-compliant interiors and lavatories, non-slip flooring and modern passenger information systems. A contrast-based safety design and LED illumination will improve visibility during boarding. The trains are tailored for varying platform heights on the ENORM routes, supporting both commuter flows and regional connections across Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony and Brandenburg.

Compared with the legacy fleet, the new Mireo sets are expected to deliver higher energy efficiency, lower operating costs and improved passenger comfort.

Part of broader investment momentum

This contract represents the fourth investment of the Marble regional rail platform and Rock Rail’s sixth German rolling stock project since 2022. MEAG will provide debt financing on behalf of Munich Re Group and other institutional lenders.

Rock Rail partner Trevor Sturmy said the new investment supports “modern, sustainable rolling stock” that will improve accessibility and contribute to Europe’s wider transport decarbonisation goals. Infracapital Managing Director Thomas Crawley added that the project reflects ongoing momentum in low-carbon mobility investment in Germany.

The ENORM network renewal is expected to stimulate passenger growth and strengthen regional rail connectivity in central Germany.
