The first Traxx 3 MS electric locomotive ordered by the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) has left the Alstom production site in Kassel, Germany. The unit, delivered with a temporary blue livery, is expected to receive its final design following completion of the testing programme.
16 locomotives and 20 years of maintenance
The dispatch is part of a contract signed in January 2024 between Alstom and ARF, covering the delivery of 16 electric locomotives and long-term maintenance services. The agreement includes a 20-year base period for maintenance and repair, with an option for an additional 20-year extension. The total value of the contract reaches approximately EUR 150 million. And, media also discussed potential increase by 23 additional locomotives.
The locomotives are designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h and configured to haul up to 16 passenger coaches. They are equipped with an onboard ERTMS system intended to ensure interoperability and safety compliance across the Romanian rail network.
The locomotives are expected to support the development of passenger rail services across Romania, linking major urban centres and integrating with the country’s ongoing investments in railway modernisation.
