The accident occurred in the station area of Fürnitz in Carinthia in Austria on Friday morning.

The train collision occurred between two freight trains, one of which was a dangerous goods transport. A side-on collision triggered a derailment. As a result of the collision, one of the two trains derailed and began to burn. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. From the trains leaked approximately 60,000 liters of paraffin.

The local firefighters described: "The picture we were presented with was unreal: a locomotive in the car park of a block of flats, burning debris behind it and a confusing situation with four overturned tank cars of another train on the siding".

Rail Cargo Group announced that train traffic to and from Italy is currently only possible to a limited extent. The operation of Villach Süd is expected to be restricted until 25 January 2023, 00:00 hrs. Train traffic to and from Slovenia is currently not affected.
