The aim of these initiatives is to improve operational reliability and address growing travel demand by supplementing the fleet with available resources.

MÁV-START, part of the MÁV-VOLÁN group, is currently testing Alstom Astride locomotives as part of its effort to address the shortage of rolling stock. The tests, which are not yet open to public traffic, form part of the group's strategy to temporarily lease used railway vehicles while preparing for the purchase of new ones. These Akiem-leased vehicles are expected to supplement the fleet and meet operational needs.

The group’s current focus is on verifying the performance of these locomotives through a series of technical trials. Today, a test run was carried out between Budapest and Hatvan, using high-demand trains, such as InterCity and night services, to evaluate the locomotive's operational capabilities. The next stage will involve testing these units with passenger traffic, once the necessary systems and equipment have been installed. This includes safety features like door controls and the locomotive's deck systems.

Pending the successful completion of the testing phase, MÁV-START could enter into a contract for up to 27 of these Alstom electric locomotives. The initial batch would consist of 15 locomotives, with the possibility of adding 12 more. These locomotives could enter service as early as next year and would be deployed on domestic railway lines.

The company plans to integrate these locomotives as a stopgap measure to replace aging V43 traction vehicles, which have a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The Alstom locomotives, by contrast, are capable of speeds up to 160 km/h and are compatible with the domestic 25 kV overhead line network.

MÁV-START’s approach mirrors its ongoing efforts with other leased vehicles, including Siemens Eurosprinter locomotives, which have been least from Akiem since last fall. The company continues to pursue short-term solutions while awaiting the arrival of newly purchased high-performance electric locomotives.
