Bane NOR has formalized an agreement with the Norwegian Armed Forces and the Swedish Armed Forces to jointly acquire new wagons. This collaboration, spurred by the recent geopolitical shifts following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the inclusion of Sweden and Finland in NATO, underscores the necessity for enhanced military logistics in Northern Europe.
The cooperation enables the three parties to purchase wagons that meet unified standards, which are designed to fulfil military requirements in both countries. Additionally, these railcars will adhere to current regulations, ensuring their versatility for broader use.
When not engaged in military operations, the Norwegian railcars will be available for use by Bane NOR. This dual-purpose approach allows for the railcars to be utilized in civilian freight transport, particularly for heavy loads, thereby maintaining the equipment's operational readiness and contributing to the overall freight capacity within the region.
This agreement is seen as a practical response to the increased demands on the railways in light of the changing security landscape in Northern Europe. By collaborating on the procurement of railcars, Norway and Sweden are enhancing their ability to mobilize heavy military material across borders, supporting both national defense and broader NATO objectives.
