PKP Intercity will modernise an additional 45 wagons to the COMBO standard.

The agreement for this expansion has been signed with PKP Intercity Remtrak, a member of the PKP Group. The modernisation process will happen at the Opole facilities, with the contract valued at EUR 77 million.

This new order involves the fifth maintenance level (P5) periodic repairs, alongside the conversion of 45 type 112A wagons to the COMBO standard. PKP Intercity Remtrak has been tasked with completing this project within two years. PKP Intercity currently operates 60 wagons of a similar specification.

This announcement follows a recent tender procedure where PKP Intercity wants to modernize 50 wagons to the COMBO standard. The Poznań-based H. Cegielski - Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych submitted the winning bid and is expected to deliver these vehicles within 36 months of the contract signing. Upon completion of both contracts, PKP Intercity's fleet will include 155 wagons of this type.

Features of COMBO Wagons

Like existing COMBO wagons, the newly modernized units will reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and feature improved accessibility for disabled passengers. A specially designed compartment will accommodate two disabled passengers and two caregivers, equipped with full-size armchairs, wheelchair spaces with three-point seat belts, SOS buttons, individual control panels for lighting and air conditioning, personal tables, and a large dustbin. Access for wheelchair users will be facilitated by ramps, automatic compartment doors, and thresholdless floors. Braille translations for all pictograms, contrasting colours for entrance doors, door handles, handrails, and buttons positioned for wheelchair accessibility are also included. Adapted toilets cater to the needs of passengers with special requirements.

Families travelling on these wagons will benefit from two separate compartments designed for caregivers with children, featuring animal-themed graphics. The seats in these compartments can be connected to create a comfortable surface, and the compartments are equipped with electrical and USB sockets. A child-friendly toilet with a changing table is also available.

The COMBO wagons will also offer a compartment-free section furnished with individual and four-person tables, equipped with electrical sockets and USB ports. Facilities for bicycle transport, vending machines, air conditioning, wireless internet access, spring and slide doors, and a modern passenger information system contribute to the overall comfort of the journey.
