The accident happened near Škrljevo, close to the final destination of the Rail Cargo Carrier – Croatia train loaded with corn. This train did not stop at Meja station for unknown reasons and continued its journey towards Rijeka. The employees of HŽ Infrastruktura and the train immediately notified their colleagues, who were on the railway section to Škrljevo at that time, and they had the time to leave their vehicle on track before the crash.
As a result of the incident, two locomotives of Rail Cargo Group (one Vectron and one Taurus locomotive) were severely damaged, and the HŽ Infrastruktura vehicle was completely derailed. There is a lot of damage caused by the 19 freight wagons and their cargo, which are scattered all over the tracks in a narrow, rocky section of this route.
The traffic on this railway route is completely stopped until the investigation is done and track clearing and repair are provided. Passenger traffic was replaced by buses, while freight rail was stopped completely until further notice.
