CFR, a Romanian railway infrastructure company, has announced a significant disruption on the Craiova – Caracal railway route following a severe derailment incident involving a private freight train operated by Global Rail Solutions.
The incident occurred around 01:30 at the entrance to the CF Leu station, where nine wagons of the freight train derailed, and two additional wagons overturned. This accident has resulted in substantial damage to the railway infrastructure, affecting both lines of traffic - a line I Leu – Malu Mare and line II Malu Mare – Leu.
The derailment has caused extensive damage over 300 meters of railway lines. Due to the scale of the damage and the need to lift the derailed wagons before repairs can commence, CFR is currently unable to provide an estimated timeframe for the restoration of regular rail services in the affected area.
Specialized intervention teams are at the scene, utilizing various heavy machinery to manage the crisis. In the interim, train services are being rerouted. Diesel traction is being used on alternative routes between Craiova – Piatra Olt – Caracal on a single-track, non-electrified line. Additionally, SRCF Craiova is providing bus replacement between Craiova and Caracal stations for passenger convenience.
