The oldest continually operating rail system west of the Mississippi, Caltrain, has seen the first electric trains on its tracks in 160 years.

Northern California’s commuter passenger rail service, Caltrain, connects the heavy-populated San Francisco to the San Jose area. The company aims to start more ecological operations by switching from diesel-powered push-pull sets to new electric multiple units made by Stadler. The special KISS trainsets, produced in Stadler’s facility in Utah, are adjusted to the US conditions. And at the beginning of June 2023, they started testing operations on the actual tracks. In total, 16 double-deck EMUs will operate on the line once the electrified operation commences.

Initial tests will be conducted between Santa Clara and College Park Stations on the Santa Clara Drill Track. Test runs will expand to the main track, between San Antonio and San Jose Diridon stations in summer 2023.
