The trains commenced service between Zagreb and Zabok, marking the project's completion.

On April 25th, the final phase of the "Renewal of the HŽ Passenger Transport Rolling Stock with New Electric Trains" project concluded with the operation of 21 new electric multiple units (EMUs).

The newly launched trains represent the addition of 21 KONČAR - Electric Vehicles EMUs to the existing fleet, taking the total count to 61 low-floor trains. The project aims to reach a fleet size of 120 new trains.

The investment in these new electric trains is part of a broader initiative to modernize HŽ Passenger Transport's rolling stock, particularly for non-electrified lines. The project includes the introduction of battery-powered trains, with the first two expected to be operational within the year.

This project has been a significant endeavor for HŽ Passenger Transport, as it is its first major EU-funded initiative. The delivery of all 21 trains, divided between 11 urban-suburban and 10 regional trains, was achieved within the stipulated 17-month timeframe. This phase of modernization aims to increase connectivity and service quality across Croatia.

The initiative was co-financed by the European Union's Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Cohesion, covering 85% of the project costs. The total estimated value of the project stands at approximately 171.725 million EUR, with EU funding amounting to around 116.840 million EUR.

The technical features of these low-floor EMUs include a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The regional trains feature four doors on each side with a capacity of 209 seats and 222 standing passengers, while the urban-suburban models have eight doors on each side, offering 130 seats and 385 standing places. Each train is equipped with wheelchair ramps, bicycle spaces, video surveillance, visual and audio station announcements, and free WiFi access for passengers. The trains, measuring 75 meters in length, can be coupled to form larger units to accommodate more passengers. They are also equipped with a regenerative braking system that feeds excess electricity back into the grid, enhancing energy efficiency and recovering about 26% of the energy consumed from the network.
