Trans Regio has introduced the first in its line of Desiro ML modernised trains for the MittelrheinBahn service.

These revamped vehicles operate on the Regionalbahnlinie (RB) 26 route, connecting Cologne, Koblenz, and Mainz. The modernization project, centred around Siemens Mobility's Desiro ML trains, is part of a new traffic contract starting December 10, 2023.

Passengers can expect enhanced experiences by introducing amenities like onboard Wi-Fi, additional power outlets at numerous seating areas, and increased seat spacing. The interior seating landscapes are also being reconfigured, aiming to offer a more comfortable journey.

TransRegio leases 17 Desiro ML trains and 6 brand-new Siemens Mireo EMUs from Alpha Trains.

In a phased approach, one Desiro ML vehicle will undergo a redesign every six weeks, gradually offering passengers a fully renewed fleet. Additionally, the "Mireo" trains, introduced in 2019, will continue to run predominantly between Bingen and Mainz, extending occasionally to Koblenz and Andernach.

Siemens Mobility is responsible for modernising the existing vehicles at their Wildenrath facility. The upgrade is not just a superficial facelift but a transformation of the 15-year-old Desiro Mainline, both aesthetically and functionally.

Trans Regio belongs to the Transdev Group and has operated the MittelrheinBahn since 2008.
