LTG Link, the passenger transport company of the Lietuvos Geležinkeliai Group, is set to offer passengers a new international sustainable rail connection between Lithuania and Latvia this winter. Following an agreement between the transport ministers and prime ministers of all three Baltic countries, the inaugural train from Vilnius to Riga is expected to depart on December 27, 2023. The new train route will run directly from Vilnius to Riga, passing through Kaišiadorys, Šiauliai, Joniškis, and Jelgava.
The company is actively preparing for the launch of the new route and has signed an agreement with the Latvian infrastructure manager for the use of Latvia's railway infrastructure. This new route offers travelers a faster and more convenient way to reach Riga, making it accessible to residents of both capitals, as well as passengers traveling to and from other cities in Lithuania and Latvia.
Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, Loreta Maskaliovienė, expressed her satisfaction with the new international connection, saying: “We hope that in the future it will be filled with a connection to Tallinn, and after the construction of the "Rail Baltica" railway line, we will be able to travel to our neighbors even faster and more comfortably.”
The new rail connection will provide passengers with a comfortable, sustainable journey without the need for transfers, and the train will be equipped to meet the needs of all travelers, including those with individual requirements. The train journey is expected to be competitive in terms of travel time compared to car journeys, providing passengers with a comfortable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
