Hungary will reopen the full Debrecen–Füzesabony line on 1 March, cutting journey times between Debrecen and Tiszafüred by almost 15 minutes.

The upgrade of the Debrecen–Balmazújváros section reduces the latter journey to 23 minutes and restores through services on the east–west regional corridor.

The works form part of a broader modernisation of line 108 in the Debrecen area, one of Hungary’s fastest-growing regional economies and an emerging industrial hub in Central Europe. Infrastructure upgrades include partial double-tracking near Debrecen, renewed track between Macs and Balmazújváros and the installation of more than 26 km of overhead line, with electrification scheduled to be energised by the end of April.

For the Hungarian network, where many secondary routes still face speed and capacity constraints, a 15-minute reduction on a regional line is notable. The changes bring more regular interval services between Debrecen, Balmazújváros and Tiszafüred and improve connections at Füzesabony towards Budapest and Eger, strengthening links between eastern Hungary and the capital.

The project also adds new stops in Debrecen’s expanding north-western districts and industrial zones, integrating rail more closely with local bus networks and park-and-ride facilities. This reflects a wider trend across Central and Eastern Europe, where EU-backed investments are targeting regional lines to support labour mobility and reduce road dependence rather than focusing solely on flagship mainline projects.

Additional timetable adjustments on neighbouring routes from 1 March are designed to improve connections and reduce waiting times, indicating a shift towards more clockface, connection-oriented planning on Hungary’s conventional network.
