DB InfraGO plans a major upgrade of Bavaria’s rail network in 2026, announcing the renewal of around 500 kilometres of track and more than 200 switches across the region. The investment—valued at over €4 billion—also includes expansion projects on selected corridors and stations.
The programme follows earlier works in the Werdenfels region and the Upper Palatinate, with the next phase focusing on both regional lines and metropolitan rail. Passengers in Munich will be among the main beneficiaries, as S-Bahn lines S2, S4 and S7 are scheduled for additional maintenance. Parts of the Allgäu network will also undergo renewal.
"These additional works mean around 10% more investment in Bavaria," said Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO. "We know the numerous construction sites will test passengers’ patience, but our aim is to avoid long-lasting disruptions. This programme is made possible thanks to stable funding from the federal Special Infrastructure and Climate Fund," he continued.
The Bavarian state government welcomed the expanded plan, while urging progress not only on main corridors but also on regional routes.
"It’s good news when the rail network in Bavaria receives more money — and it is badly needed," said Christian Bernreiter, Bavaria’s State Minister for Housing, Construction and Transport. "Maintenance and new construction must move forward. That applies to major routes, but also to lines in rural areas, such as the electrification of the Franconia–Saxony corridor," he added.
With funding secured, DB InfraGO aims to tackle long-delayed renewals and prevent recurring speed restrictions and bottlenecks. Work is expected to cause several temporary timetable adjustments, but the operator emphasises that the result will be a more reliable, resilient and modern rail system for Bavaria.
