PORR has been awarded a design-and-build contract for a major rail infrastructure project in Romania.
Lot 5: Infrastructure renewal on TEN-T corridor
The project area, referred to as Lot 5 of the Craiova–Caransebeș line, forms part of the wider Orient/East-Med TEN-T Core Network Corridor. The scope includes upgrading the existing infrastructure to support higher capacity and future interoperability requirements.
The line segment currently consists of single-track operations and partial electrification. Under the contract, PORR will carry out double-tracking of the route, build two additional double-track sections, and upgrade associated civil works infrastructure.
Civil works and tunnel construction
The works package includes:
- Construction of 18 new bridges and 54 culverts
- Rehabilitation of the existing Rachitoberg Tunnel (496 m)
- Construction of a new double-track tunnel, Poarta I, with a length of 1,279 m
- Renovation of six stations: Băile Herculane, Mehadia Nouă, Mehadia, Iablanița, Crușovăț, and Domașnea Cornea
The line will be equipped with full electrification and ERTMS Level 2 signaling. Upon completion, the infrastructure will be aligned with European railway traffic management standards.
Timeline and contract value
The total project duration is specified at 60 months. The full contract value stands at RON 2.14 billion, which converts to approximately EUR 428 million. PORR Construct SRL, the Romanian subsidiary of Austria-headquartered PORR, is executing the contract.
