Rail access to the Port of Gdańsk has been modernized by PKP PLK with the installation of a new rail traffic control system on sections of railway line between Pruszcz Gdański and Gdańsk Port Północny, and line connecting Gdańsk Południowy and Gdańsk Olszynka.
The newly implemented ERTMS/ETCS Level 1 system supports train drivers and dispatchers, ensuring safer operations. Features include automatic stopping of trains in the event of threats, as well as tools for better route management and rail capacity utilization.
The task was part of a broader initiative to improve rail access to the Port of Gdańsk. It was executed by a consortium led by Zakłady Automatyki Kombud, along with Siemens Mobility entities from Warsaw and Munich. Up to 85% of the funding came from the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme.
Line no. 226 connects the port to southern Poland while bypassing the city center. Recent upgrades to this route included replacing the single-track railway bridge over the Martwa Wisła with a double-track structure, increasing train speeds to 100 km/h, and improving overall capacity.
This investment complements other modernization efforts completed in 2022, which focused on improving rail access infrastructure to the Port of Gdańsk. Enhancements included:
- Electrification and modernization of nearly 70 km of tracks.
- Upgrades to 233 turnouts across key areas, including Gdańsk Port Północny and Gdańsk Kanał Kaszubski stations.
- Expansion of the Gdańsk Port Północny Local Control Centre and the construction of a new signal box equipped with updated computer and telecommunications systems.
These improvements allow for the handling of longer trains (up to 750 meters) and heavier loads (22.5 tons per axle) at the port quays. A new road viaduct along Ku Ujście Street ensures efficient multimodal transport.
The modernization program for rail access to the Port of Gdańsk, with a total investment of EUR 260 million, received significant financial support. Approximately 40% of the funding was provided by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
