The new railway line is a joint effort of Västra Götaland region, the Swedish Transport Administration, and local municipalities.
The agreement outlines the route and financing structure for the railway, which will improve connectivity between Gothenburg and Borås, two of the region's major cities. The project includes a better access to Landvetter Airport, which is expected to benefit from an expanded catchment area and improved transport links.
Västra Götaland region has committed to co-financing up to EUR 220 million, with plans for frequent regional train services on the new line. Additionally, a new travel center is planned at the airport to provide bus connections from surrounding municipalities.
The agreement will now be presented to the government and is subject to approval by the plenary assemblies of the involved parties. Once confirmed, the Swedish Transport Administration will proceed with the planning and implementation stages, according to its mandate from October 2023.
